Liyab aims podium finish in Wild Rift ICON preseason tournament

Globe Telecom professional esports team Liyab is gearing up for bigger tournaments and campaigns by aiming for a podium finish in the Wild Rift ICON series preseason tournament, which will happen on March 20, 2021.

Team Liyab is coming off to a 7th-8th place finish in the Wild Rift Asia Brawl and Frontier Wild Rift Invitational and a bronze medal output in the Frontier Wild Rift Invitational tournament.

The Philippines-based team Liyab is composed of Eric "EXOSEN" Gubatan, Kevin "GAMBIT" Dizon, Nicoli "NICCSU" Montenegro, Miguel "MIGGIE" Banaag, Lars "3SH" Maniego, and Robert "MORAYTABOY" Tan.

Team Liyab head coach Edriane "Eds" Balbalosa said, "While the team is relatively new, our participation in the last two tournaments provided us with valuable experience and a glimpse of what our players are capable of in succeeding competitions. We also noted the adjustments and strategies we need to do to enable the team to compete in the next level. More than a podium finish, we are really aiming to book our place in the main tournament. Hopefully our fans and supporters will rally behind the team to achieve this goal."

The Frontier Wild Rift Invitational tournament features the new version of the most-played online game League of Legends, for mobile devices like Android and iOS. Liyab was one of the eight teams invited to compete, along with Bren Esports, Execration, Nexplay Esports, RRQ, SMART Omega, Team Secret, and Sunsparks.

The team started its campaign with a victory over RRQ PH but fell short of a spot in the finals to the competitive opponent Nexplay. Liyab won the bronze medal after defeating Sunspark 2-1. This was Liyab's best performance in previous tournaments.

Head coach Balbalosa added, "There is still so much work to be done but at least we are battle ready for the next big tournament, which is the Wild Rift ICON Preseason Series."

Liyab will compete against seven other invited teams in the Wild Rift ICON preseason series. The games will take place from March 20 to March 21. From the first round to the semifinals, the tournament is a single-elimination best-of-five format. It will be a best-of-seven matchup in the Finals.
