Free Fire World Series (FFWS) 2021 cancelled due to COVID concerns

Garena has announced that its premier tournament Free Fire World Series 2021, was cancelled due to COVID-19 concerns. Free Fire World Series (FFWS) 2021 is supposed to take place in November.

An Instagram post by Garena Indonesia said that their priority is the health and safety of everyone involved. The decision to cancel the tournament was made after considering all options to protect the health of all esports teams and players.

"It is with a heavy heart that we announce that FFWS 2021 has had to be canceled due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic situation around the world," said Garena Indonesia in Bahasa.

"We have tried to consider all options that can be implemented by prioritizing the health and safety of all esports teams and players from various countries who will be involved in FFWS, we have to make this tough decision," added Garena Indonesia.

Garena Indonesia also added that multiple regional tournaments might be held as a replacement.

The Free Fire World Series, held twice a year, is the biggest tournament of the mobile battle royale game.

The previous FFWS was held in late May in Singapore, with Thai squad Team Phoenix Force claiming the championship and a USD 500,000 grand prize. The tournament drew 5.4 million concurrent online viewers on different streaming platforms, except for Chinese streaming platforms.

In 2020, due to the pandemic, the FFWS was also cancelled. The event was replaced by the Free Fire Continental Series (FFCS), an online tournament split into three regions: EMEA, Americas, and Asia.
