Steam Deck set to release Feb 25, 2022

Game company Valve has announced the official release date of Steam Deck, its new handheld console. Steam Deck is set to release on February 25, 2022.

According to Valve, they will be sending out the first batch of order emails to reservation holders. Customers will have three (3) days from the date they receive their order confirmation email to complete their purchase before their reservation is released to the next person in the queue. Beginning February 28, the first units will be delivered to customers. Additionally, Valve intends to release new order email batches weekly.

The Steam Deck device is Valve's response to mobile gaming, bringing all of the Steam platform's familiar features to a portable package.

Steam Deck was first announced in July 2021. It features a 7-inch (1280 x 800) LCD touchscreen with a 60Hz screen refresh rate. Under the hood, it runs a custom AMD APU processor composed of a Zen 2 CPU and an RDNA 2 GPU. It is paired with 16GB of LPDDR5 RAM and storage options of 64GB eMMC, 256GB NVMe SSD, and 512GB NVMe SSD.

Each model comes equipped with a high-speed microSD card slot for additional storage. Moreover, powering the Steam Deck is a 40Whr battery capable of providing between two and eight hours of gameplay when charged via USB Type-C.

The Steam Deck's button layout includes A B X Y buttons, a D-pad, analog and bumper triggers on the L and R axis, View and Menu buttons, two full-size analog sticks with capacitive touch, and four assignable grip buttons. Additionally, it features high-definition haptics, two 32.5mm square trackpads, and a 6-axis gyroscope. For audio, it packs an embedded DSP stereo, a 3.5mm audio jack, and a dual microphone array.

In terms of software, the console runs on Linux-based SteamOS 3.0 with Proton, a compatibility layer that enables developers to run their games without the need for porting work.
