GARUDA ASHTOTHARAM
Translated by
P.R.Ramachander
(God Garuda, the vahana or steed of Mahavishnu was the son of Sage Kashyapa and Vinutha. His elder brother is Aruna, the charioteer of the Sun God. The serpents were the children of same sage Kashyapa through another wife Kadru. Kadru and the serpents deceived Vinutha and made her , their slave. When Garuda wanted his mother to be freed , they demanded that he should bring the pot of nectar guarded by Devendra. Garuda defeats indra but they together play a trick and deceive Kadru and her children and Vinutha gets her freedom. Later Garuda accepts the offer of becoming Vahana to Lord Vishnu .His importance can be gauged by the fact that there is a Garuda Purana , which details the journey of dead soul to the place of Yama and also Garuda Upanishad. IN Vedas he is referred as Syena . He has a gold coloured body , white face , red wings , eagle’s beak and a crown on his head. He is seen wearing many great serpents as Ornaments. The Vaishnavites refer to him as the “Periya Thiruvadi “ (The bigger vahana) and Hanuman as the “Siriya Thiruvadi “ because Garuda carries Lord Vishnu in all his incarnations but Hanuman carries him only during the incarnation as Rama .let Lord Garuda bless us all.)
