Smart expands 5G rollout in Metro Manila, Luzon

PLDT-owned Smart Communications is further expanding its 5G network rollout across all Metro Manila cities and Cavite, Laguna, and Pampanga provinces.

Smart 5G features fast internet speeds, ultra-low latency, and higher efficiency. To experience this, Smart Prepaid and Postpaid subscribers may use their Smart-certified 5G devices in areas with Smart 5G coverage in Metro Manila's 17 cities and municipalities, the cities of Angeles and Mabalacat in Pampanga, Binan and Santa Rosa in Laguna, and Bacoor in Cavite.

Alfredo S. Panlilio, Smart Communications President and CEO and PLDT Chief Revenue Officer, said, "As we ramp-up our Smart 5G rollout across Metro Manila and the rest of the country, we are bringing our customers closer to an even higher level of customer experience in terms of enjoying high-definition video, playing esports and using new digital services."

Mr. Panlilio also added, "Recently, Smart was once again hailed by Ookla to be the fastest Mobile Network in the Philippines. With Smart 5G, the fastest will get even faster."

Smart launched its 5G service commercially in July 2020 and was the first to rollout 5G nationwide.

Jane J. Basas, SVP and Head of Consumer Wireless Business at Smart, said, "Our 5G future is here, and we are making it simpler for our customers to maximize the country's fastest network--made even faster with 5G."

In December 2020, Smart released its latest Signature 5G Plans. Smart Signature SIM-Only Plans were also upgraded, now with Netflix Mobile Plan subscription bundle.

Smart also started its 5G network rollout in the following sites, including Cebu, Boracay, Iloilo, and Davao.

Smart 5G milestones

Since 2016, Smart has been conducting tests with 5G, when it achieved speeds of 2.5 Gbps using 100 MHz with latency of just one millisecond.

Smart also successfully tested the 5G Carrier Aggregation (CA) last year along with its technology partners Ericsson and Huawei, making it one of the first telcos in the Asia Pacific to test CA on the live 5G network. To build a broader pipe for even higher data speeds, CA combines two or more different radio frequency bands, enhancing the speed, thereby improving the overall user experience of 5G.

The Philippines' first 5G base stations in Makati with Huawei and the Clark Freeport Zone in Pampanga with Ericsson were introduced in 2018. In 2019, Smart also unveiled Araneta City's first Smart 5G Lifestyle center and 5G-enabled shopping mall and Ateneo de Manila University's first Smart 5G campus with Nokia.

It also recently launched 5G at the Gariath Concepts esports venue (Philippine-based organization behind ESGS, Rev Major, and PGF) in Quezon City, the first 5G-powered esports platform. TV5 Media Center (the multimedia arm of PLDT) in Mandaluyong City is now also powered by 5G. The telco also recently unveiled its first 5G-powered sports broadcast at the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) in the Clark Freeport, Pampanga.

Continuous investment on 5G

These projects make up a significant portion of PLDT's sustained network investments, totaling some Php 286.3 billion from 2016 to 2020. PLDT and Smart are ready to spend between Php 88 billion and Php 92 billion in capital expenditures in 2021 to fulfill the requirements of their mobile and fixed-line subscribers.

PLDT's fiber infrastructure is now at more than 429,000 kilometers as of December 2020. This fiber technology supports Smart's 5G network.

At present, Smart's networks cover 96% of the population and are available in 95% of towns and municipalities. Smart has also increased its base stations to over 59,000 as of December 2020.
