The Philippines' broadband and mobile internet speed continue to improve for February 2021, according to the recent Speedtest Global Index by internet testing firm Ookla. The Philippines now ranks 83rd out of 141 countries on mobile and 92nd out of 175 countries in fixed broadband.

The Speedtest Global Index for February 2021 reported that the Philippines increased three spots on the global ranking for mobile internet, from 86th to 83rd place. The Philippines recorded the average mobile download speed for February 2021 at 26.24 Mbps. This is slightly higher than last January 2021 at 25.77Mbps. The upload speed and latency also improved posted at 6.42 Mbps and 31 ms, respectively.

On the other hand, the Philippines currently ranks 92nd from the previous rank of 100th for the fixed broadband category. Based on the February 2021 data, the Philippines' average fixed broadband download speed surged to 38.46 Mbps from 32.73 Mbps in January 2021. Other statistics also improved; the Philippines has recorded an upload speed of 36.96 Mbps and latency of 23 ms (ping).

The country that topped the mobile internet speed chart is the United Arab Emirates, having an average speed of 177.16 Mbps. Meanwhile, Singapore ranked first in terms of fixed broadband speed with an average of 238.59 Mbps.

The Philippines has seen several improvements due to the telco industry's continued investments in network infrastructure expansion.

The Philippine government's Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) stated that they have been working with other agencies to streamline permitting requirements to support telcos with their cellular towers' deployment. With this development on network infrastructures, there was a significant addition in cellular towers from July 2020 to January 2021, totaling 3,211 new cell sites.

Moreover, DICT and the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) closely monitor telcos' progress regarding their submitted rollout plans for 2021.
