Globe launches eco-SIM made of recycled materials
Globe has launched the first eco-SIM cards in Asia made of recycled materials.
According to Globe, the deployment, which began in November 2021 for select postpaid mobile customers, was initiated to contribute to environmental sustainability.
Globe has partnered with Thales for the development of eco-SIM cards made of 100 percent recycled materials, including polystyrene waste from the refrigerator.
Thales is an advanced technology firm investing in digital and "deep tech" innovations. The company has been a strategic partner to key customers in the civil aviation, defense, digital security, ground transportation sectors, and air traffic management in the Philippines since 2010.
Globe has shared that Thales and its eco-SIM technology is helping them meet their goals of reducing e-waste, lessening their carbon footprint, and contributing to the Philippines' sustainability.
"This partnership with the Thales Group not only enables us to come up with a solution for our telco business, but it also gives our customers the opportunity to step up and choose to live more sustainably," said Globe's Chief Sustainability Officer and SVP for Corporate Communications Yoly Crisanto.
Globe said Thales' eco-SIM was developed in partnership with Veolia in 2020. It added that these eco-SIM cards have a "neutral carbon footprint." They are made from 100% recycled polystyrene recovered from discarded refrigerator interiors. That being the case, Thales' comprehensive carbon offset program fully offsets the CO2 emissions from the manufacturing process and electronic components.
"The Eco-SIM card is small, but it has a big impact on plastic and polymer waste and is another example of how we innovate to drive change," said Thales Digital Identity & Security Head of Mobile Connectivity Solutions for Asia Jon Cahilig.
As per Globe, although SIM cards are among the smallest consumer items at only 4 grams each, they account for approximately 4.5 billion manufactured annually, which equates to about 20,000 tons of plastic and other polymers or the weight of roughly 4,000 jeepneys.
Globe was also the first carrier in the country to introduce electronic SIM cards, or eSIMs, as a replacement for physical SIM cards in 2018. eSIMs are digital SIM cards embedded inside compatible mobile phone models. They enable users to manage multiple profiles with different mobile phone numbers on a single device and seamlessly switch between lines. Additionally, it allows the connection of numerous devices such as smartphones and smartwatches under a single mobile number.
