Omega Esports' Kelra handed 2-week ban for sexist remarks

Omega Esports' Duane 'Kelra' Pillas is suspended for two weeks and fined an undisclosed amount by the MPL Philippines for violating league rules prohibiting sexual harassment, discrimination, and denigration, following his sexist remarks in a streamed game.

In a statement released on August 16, Mobile Legends Professional League Philippines (MPL PH) said Kelra violated the league's rules 'for offensive comments against fellow professional players and showing of unprofessional behavior' during the said livestream.

MPL PH handed out a two-week suspension on Kelra for the offense, which will begin on the first day of the MPL PH S8. Omega Esports and its players also received a warning from the MPL PH, now a franchise-based league.

Kelra found himself in crisis following the release of a livestream video. He made homophobic remarks toward Blacklist International players Johnmar "OhMyV33nus" Villaluna and Danerie James "Wise" del Rosario, wherein Villaluna is a member of the LGBTQ+ community.

"MPL-PH Operating Committee does not tolerate any form of discrimination in the league and we expect our professional players to follow a strict code of conduct," said MPL Philippines.

According to an official statement released on August 16, Smart Communications-led Omega Esports said they are 'saddened and disappointed' with Kelra's unprofessional behavior.

The team will conduct an internal investigation to address the matter.

"Rest assured we are taking steps to ensure respect and professionalism above all among all our players," the team added.

On August 15, Kelra apologized for his offensive comments referring to Blacklist International's Jhonmar "OhMyV33nus" Villaluna and Danerie "Wise" Rosario. He also admitted that he had been immature and irresponsible.

"Lubos kong pinagsisisihan lahat at nangangakong magiging malaking learning lesson ito para sa akin. Walang dami ng salita ang makakaexpress kung gaano ko nireregret itong issue na to ngayon," said Kelra on his Facebook post. MPL PH Season 8 was initially scheduled to begin on August 13 but was postponed after NCR was placed on lockdown until August 20 due to the worsening coronavirus pandemic in the country. There has been no announcement of a specific date for the league's resumption.

Kelra rose to fame as Execration's star player. He helped Execration finish second in the MPL PH Season 7 standings, where they were defeated in the finals by Blacklist International.
