'Lawmage Academy', 'Agimat': Filipino-made indie games
"Lawmage Academy" and "Agimat and the World Beyond" are Filipino-made games that we need to watch out for. Both games are promising, and they'll make you proud. Check out more details about these two Pinoy indie games below.
Lawmage Academy
Lawmage Academy is a turn-based fantasy RPG created by a solo indie game developer Gian Arabejo, a full-time human rights lawyer. He goes online by the name Verinius. Gian made the game using RPG Maker MV, so you'll be experiencing the engine's 16-bit inspired visuals. The interface is not graphics-intensive; thus, even low spec PCs can run the game.
In Lawmage Academy, you assume the role of a student at a magical school, training to become a protector of the fantasy world, Magusgaia. You will begin being enrolled in one of four houses (Foxhelm, Soulstice, Vissage, and Drakewood), where you will learn how to master spells, brew potions, and meet new friends.
Moreover, there are missions outside the academy that you can perform, like fighting magical creatures via JRPG-style turn-based combat. Your choice plays a vital aspect in this game, as it affects gameplay by altering the way the story unfolds, the abilities you have access to, and how characters in the world react to you.
Lawmage Academy's demo version is available now via PC on Steam and itch.io. The full release is scheduled to release around 2022.
Agimat and the World Beyond
Agimat and the World Beyond is a 2D action side-scroller game created by Boom Brain Studio. The game is based on Philippine mythology: mystical folklores and mythical creatures. It was being developed using Unity, which is a cross-platform game engine.
Agimat and the World Beyond revolves around the story of Lukas and Lily, two siblings who enter on an epic adventure to bring peace to the world of Atycia.
Players can choose from the two characters, Lukas and Lily, with different sets of weapons. Lukas can wield axe, spear, arnis, and bow. Meanwhile, Lily can use a whip, sword, karambit, and scepter.
Upon fighting, the characters will unveil the power of their Agimat, which will turn them into their "true form," powerful creatures with unique abilities. Lukas turns into an aswang that can see in the dark. On the other hand, Lily turns into a manananggal that can fly fast.
While in-game, you can switch between Lukas and Lily on the fly by clicking the quick button input.
Agimat and the World Beyond is slated to launch in late 2023 through PC, PlayStation, Xbox, and the Nintendo Switch. The demo version is expected to release in the last quarter of 2021. A mobile port will be available after the official launch. The game's development progress is documented on its Kickstarter page.
