Windows 11 set to release on October 5 as a free upgrade

Microsoft has announced that Windows 11 OS will be released on October 5, 2021. The latest operating system will be available as a free upgrade to eligible Windows 10 PCs and PCs that come pre-installed with Windows 11.

The rollout will occur in batches. Microsoft will offer new eligible devices the upgrade first. After that phase, Windows 11 will roll out to more in-market devices in the weeks and months following October 5. By mid-2022, Microsoft aims to offer a free upgrade to Windows 11 to all eligible devices.

On the other hand, Microsoft confirmed that there'd still be no Android app support for the October 5 launch. Instead, Microsoft will test the feature first with Windows Insiders before rolling it out to the public months later.

How to download Windows 11 OS (once it's available)
Those with a Windows 10 PC eligible for the upgrade will receive a notification when the update is available.

Users may also check if Windows 11 is ready for their device by going to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and click Check for Updates. If available, you'll see "Feature update to Windows 11." Click Download and install.

Windows 11 minimum system requirements
You can install Windows 11 on any hardware through the ISO file method. Check out the Windows 11 minimum required specs below.
  • PC with 64-bit 1GHz processor with two or more cores
  • 4GB of RAM
  • 64GB of storage
  • TPM 2.0 chip

But if you installed Windows 11 via this ISO file method, your PC will be in an "unsupported" version. Meaning, an unsupported version of Windows 11 may be unable to access Windows Update or even security fixes.

For devices that are not compatible with Windows 11, Microsoft will continue to support Windows 10 until October 14, 2025.
