Google's Chrome OS Flex brings Chromebook features to PC, Mac

Google has announced early access to the Chrome OS Flex, which is now available for installation on Windows and Mac computers.

According to Google's blog post, the new version of Chrome OS, designed for schools and businesses, is optimized for use on older PCs and Macs. Installing the operating system can be done "within minutes."

Essentially, your laptop, PC, or Mac can be converted into a Chromebook or Chromebox for free. However, unlike the said devices, it appears that Chrome OS Flex does not support Android apps or Google Play, as noted by Google.

Google says users can immediately begin testing an early access version of Chrome OS Flex if they have a compatible PC or Mac computer and an empty USB drive. Before downloading the new operating system, users must complete a form and verify that their device is on the list of certified models.

1. Head to the Chrome web store, search for Chromebook Recovery Utility and download the extension.

2. Click Get Started to launch the Chromebook Recovery Utility extension.

3. After that, choose from Select a model from a list, Select a manufacturer, or Select a product.

4. Click the Continue button, and when prompted, insert your USB drive.

5. Select your USB drive from the menu, click Continue, and click Create now.

With this, users can boot a live version of Chrome OS Flex from the USB drive without negatively impacting their existing system. They can also choose to install the OS on their PC or Mac computer permanently.

Google notes, however, that the OS is in early access and that users may encounter some instability.
