Ookla Speedtest Global Index report for January 2022 indicated slight drops in mobile and fixed broadband median download speeds for the Philippines.

The country ranked 92nd globally for the Mobile category, recording an average download speed of 17.95 Mbps. The mobile upload speed was posted at 5.42 Mbps, while 24 ms is the average latency. Compared to the December 2021 ranking of 89th that listed an average download of 19.20 Mbps, 5.60 Mbps for upload, and latency of 24 ms, both download and upload slightly decreased.

For the Fixed Broadband, the country placed 67th, posting an average of 49.52 Mbps download speeds. The average upload speed and latency were registered at 44.41 Mbps and 6 ms, respectively. Compared to the previous month's ranking of 63rd that recorded an average download of 50.26 Mbps, 44.06 Mbps for upload, and latency of 6 ms, the download speed slightly dipped.

PH ranks 92nd in mobile and 67th in fixed broadband, according to the January 2022 data of the Ookla Speedtest Global Index.

Meanwhile, the United Arab Emirates topped the mobile internet speed charts worldwide, recording an average speed of 135.62 Mbps. Monaco dominated the fixed broadband category, with an average of 192.68 Mbps download speeds.

Ookla noted that they utilized median download speed to represent the typical user experience accurately.

The Speedtest Global Index for January 2022 includes 140 countries for mobile and 179 for fixed broadband.

Ookla's Speedtest platform compares results on internet speed across the world, based on millions of tests conducted monthly using the internet testing service.

Further, Ookla considers at least 300 unique user results for both mobile or fixed broadband to be ranked in either category, leveraging a massive internet testing infrastructure with over 10,000 servers in more than 190 countries.

The slight drop in mobile and fixed broadband rank can be attributed to Typhoon Odette that hit the Philippines in December 2021. Odette heavily damaged provinces in Visayas and Mindanao.

Telcos Globe, PLDT, DITO, and Converge continue to work on fully restoring their internet services in response to the National Telecommunications Commission's call to normalize telco services in all areas affected by Odette immediately.
