DITO passes 1st technical audit, records speeds of 507 Mbps for 5G, 85 Mbps for 4G

According to National Telecommunications Commission (NTC), the third telco player DITO Telecommunity passed its first-year commitment technical audit after recording a minimum average internet speed of 507.5 Mbps for its 5G network and 85.9 Mbps for its 4G network.

The technical audit began on January 7, 2021, after the NTC released a resolution to extend the audit, which was initially scheduled in July 2020, one year after DITO obtained Public Convenience and Requirement Certificate (CPCN) on July 8, 2019.

According to independent auditor RG Manabat & Co., DITO's coverage reached 37.48% of the population, or equivalent to 37,845,315 based on the 2015 national census population of 100.98 million, a total of 8,860 barangays across the country. For its first year of operations, DITO Telecommunity's public convenience certificate set the coverage at 37 percent.

Mobile internet download speeds achieved 102.4 Mbps for 4G and 769.1 Mbps for 5G near base stations. At the middle point, 4G speed was posted at 91.2 Mbps while 5G was at 437.1 Mbps, NTC said.

The tests conducted in the farthest connection from a base station recorded 64.4 Mbps speed for 4G and 316.5 Mbps for 5G. According to NTC, random sampling was used to choose 12 percent among the existing 1,602 DITO cell sites for field testing.

The RG Manabat & Co. noted that the audit was conducted while DITO does not have subscribers yet.

NTC, in its statement, said, "Dito's entry in the market is a welcome development in the telco industry. A healthier competition within the industry fulfills President Duterte's promise to the Filipino people of better telco service thru cheaper prices and improved internet speed."

DITO Telecommunity is scheduled to launch commercially in March 2021.

The Dito consortium, initially Mislatel, is made up of Dennis Uy's Udenna Corporation, Udenna's subsidiary Chelsea Logistics Holdings Inc., and Chinese state-owned China Telecommunications Corporation.
