According to the January 2021 data of the Ookla Speedtest Global Index, the Philippines' internet speed in terms of mobile has slightly improved. The fixed broadband result shows consistent download speed improvement.

The Philippines ranked 86th out of 140 countries in terms of mobile data speed, having an average of 25.77 Mbps as of January 2021, compared to December 2020's record of 22.50 Mbps. PH jumped ten spots from its 96th rank in December 2020.

On the other hand, the Philippines displays consistent download speed improvement in fixed broadband at 32.73 Mbps as of January 2021, ranked 100th place out of 175 countries. It is slightly higher than December 2020's record of 31.44 Mbps.

In terms of mobile internet speed, the United Arab Emirates topped the chart in Ookla's Speedtest Global Index, having an average speed of 183.03 Mbps. Meanwhile, Singapore ranked first in terms of fixed broadband speed with an average of 247.54 Mbps.

The Philippines has seen numerous developments due to sustained investments by the telco industry in network infrastructure growth.

For its part, Globe Telecom was able to build 1,300 new towers in different locations across the country last year, or 18% more compared to 2019.

The telco is also undergoing network enhancements to use more advanced technologies to improve users' overall data experience. Around 90% of Globe's cell towers are now installed with 4G LTE technology.

More areas are now powered with Globe 5G. The telco rolls out the new 5G technology in at least 848 locations in Metro Manila and Rizal and 183 sites in Visayas and Mindanao. NCR has the fastest progress covering 80% of the metro.

Meanwhile, PLDT-owned Smart Communications is expanding its 5G network rollout across all Metro Manila cities and Cavite, Laguna, and Pampanga provinces.
