The Vietnam Recreational and Electronic Sport Association (VIRESA) has announced the esports titles included in the 2021 SEA Games. There will be ten gold medals across eight titles, namely Mobile Legends: Bang Bang, Free Fire, Arena of Valor, CrossFire, PUBG mobile, FIFA Online 4, League of Legends, and two divisions composed of Male and Female divisions for League of Legends Wild Rift.
Five of the eight esports titles in the competition are mobile games, with only three being played on a PC. These mobile games include Mobile Legends, LOL Wild Rift, Arena of Valor (AOV), PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds (PUBG) Mobile, and Free Fire.
The Wild Rift is divided into two competitions with separate events for men and women. Furthermore, the PUBG Mobile event was split into individual and team categories.
On the other hand, the medal events for PC titles include League of Legends, CrossFire, and FIFA Online 4.
Some of the esports titles removed in the 2021 SEA Games are Dota 2, StarCraft II, Hearthstone, Pro Evolution Soccer, and Tekken 7.
The lineup of Esports titles was decided by the Vietnamese Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism. According to the announcement, the SEA Games 2021 will be participated by eleven Southeast Asian countries and feature 40 disciplines.
This will be the second time SEA Games competition will include the Esports category. The 2019 SEA Games is the first to feature esports as a medal event. Among the games played are Dota 2, StarCraft II, Mobile Legends: Bang Bang, Arena of Valor, Tekken 7, and Hearthstone.
The Philippines topped the inaugural esports medal event garnering three gold medals from Dota 2, StarCraft II, and Mobile Legends: Bang Bang. Meanwhile, Vietnam only managed three bronze medals Dota 2, Arena of Valor, and StarCraft II.
Moreover, Razer, the official esports partner for the 2019 SEA Games, has announced its interest to be once again the official sponsor for the upcoming 2021 SEA Games.
The 2021 Southeast Asian Games (31st SEA Games) will take place in Hanoi from November 21 to December 2. Vietnam will host the SEA Games for the second time since hosting the event for the first time in 2003.
